This year’s HLTH conference brought a bevy of news announcements — from partnerships to new product features to acquisitions and more. In this list, MedCity News compiled short summaries for 11 of the conference’s most notable announcements.

Through a new partnership, Castell will be able to refer members of its Utah health plan customers to Headspace for behavioral health coaching and therapy.

Through an expanded partnership, Virgin Pulse’s clients who use the Homebase for Health platform can now access Headspace’s full suite of services. This includes an on-demand employee assistance program, clinical support and self-guided tools.

Headspace Health’s mindfulness services will now be offered on Gympass’ platform. The company has a network of more than 50,000 gyms, classes, trainers and wellbeing apps that it offers to more than 10,000 companies.

Several experts look for mental health startups that have conducted rigorous randomized controlled trials. Some of these companies include Ginger, Calm and Woebot.

The product — available January 1 — combines Headspace’s meditation and mindfulness services with Ginger’s coaching, therapy and psychiatry services. It also gives employers insights on their employees’ engagement and outcomes.

One area in particular Headspace Health is looking for researchers to study is the impact of the company on underserved populations. It is looking for peer-reviewed research proposals from academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, healthcare institutions and other researchers. 

Acquiring Shine will help Headspace Health improve its diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts. Shine was first created in 2016 to provide mental health support to those in marginalized communities.

At CB Insights’ Future of Health Conference, Ginger CEO Russell Glass talked about how the company merged with Headspace to form a $3 billion mental health company and how to scale up a mental health business. 

The two companies will merge to form Headspace Health, which will combine Headspace’s many meditation and wellness exercises with Ginger’s coaching and therapy services. The combined company will have more than 800 employees and a $3 billion valuation. 

The managed care company picked six mental health apps that it made available to its members over the past two years. It recently published a paper showing patients were more likely to download or use digital health tools when referred by a physician.

Meditation app Headspace raised $47.7 million in funding, according to an SEC filing. The new funds come four months after Headspace closed a $93 million series C round.

Headspace raised a total of $93 million in funding, including a $53 million equity round and $40 million of debt capital. The company said it would put some of the funds toward clinical tests, but has not shared new details on its efforts to seek FDA approval.
